It has been found that bentonite is an important additive. Bentonite provides a binding function and produces a glassy phase during firing, thereby creating strength in the final product. In addition, bentonite provides control over the uniformity of the slurry in the organic foam material.<\/p>\n<p>The binder material provides sufficient strength to hold the mixture together to form the final product. The binder of the present invention is sodium silicate.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, 10% to 40% of binder and water are present in the slurry. The water content simply obtains the proper fluidity to immerse the polymer foam in the aqueous slurry and coat the sponge.
