Dalam metode klorinasi, ketika gas klorin dialirkan ke dalam cairan aluminium, terbentuklah banyak AlCl\u2083 berukuran sangat kecil, dan gelembung-gelembung tersebut tercampur secara merata dalam cairan aluminium. Gas klorin juga dapat mengklorinasi beberapa unsur yang lebih negatif daripada batang aluminium 6061. Campuran klorin dan nitrogen digunakan untuk memurnikan aluminium cair.
