Setelah proses pemurnian aluminium oksida dari bauksit, alumina umumnya berbentuk bubuk putih yang mirip dengan garam dapur atau gula pasir. Pertama, setelah bauksit dihancurkan, dicuci, dan dikeringkan, bauksit tersebut dilarutkan dengan soda kaustik pada suhu tinggi. Selanjutnya, campuran tersebut disaring untuk menghilangkan kotoran, yang disebut \u201clumpur merah,\u201d yang kemudian dibuang dengan benar. Larutan alumina yang tersisa dipindahkan ke tangki tinggi yang disebut presipitator. Di dalam tangki presipitator, larutan panas tersebut mulai mendingin dan benih aluminium hidroksida, yaitu partikel-partikel yang sangat kecil, ditambahkan. Benih aluminium hidroksida tersebut merangsang pengendapan kristal aluminium hidroksida padat. Aluminium hidroksida mengendap di dasar tangki dan kemudian dipisahkan. Terakhir, aluminium hidroksida dicuci untuk menghilangkan sisa soda kaustik dan dipanaskan untuk menghilangkan kelebihan air. Setelah proses ini, alumina (aluminium oksida) muncul sebagai bubuk putih halus. Ahli kimia asal Austria ini berupaya mengembangkan metode untuk memasok alumina ke industri tekstil (untuk digunakan sebagai mordant, yaitu zat yang berikatan dengan pewarna dan dengan demikian mengikat warna pada bahan). Proses Bayer menjadi penting dalam industri produksi aluminium ketika digabungkan dengan proses elektrolisis Hall\u2013H\u00e9roult. Dengan penggabungan kedua proses tersebut, bijih bauksit dapat diolah menjadi alumina, yang kemudian diubah menjadi aluminium. Saat ini, proses Bayer hampir tidak mengalami perubahan dan digunakan untuk memproduksi hampir seluruh pasokan alumina di dunia, sebagai langkah perantara dalam produksi aluminium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Penggunaan Alumina dalam Industri<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Selain digunakan dalam produksi aluminium primer, aluminium oksida memiliki kegunaan industri penting lainnya. Alumina sering digunakan sebagai bahan pengisi untuk plastik. Senyawa ini juga banyak digunakan sebagai bahan abrasif dan merupakan pengganti yang lebih murah untuk berlian industri. Serpihan aluminium oksida menghasilkan efek reflektif pada cat yang digunakan pada mobil. Penggunaan alumina dalam skala terbesar terjadi di kilang, di mana senyawa aluminium oksida ini digunakan untuk mengubah gas limbah hidrogen sulfida yang berbahaya menjadi belerang unsur.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alumina_Products\"><\/span>Produk Alumina<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Alumina yang terdapat dalam bentuk alami dan bebas disebut sebagai mineral korundum. Dalam kondisi tertentu, korundum dapat terbentuk menjadi batu permata safir dan rubi. Batu permata ini dapat diproduksi secara sintetis dan kadang-kadang disebut sebagai alumina. Istilah ini biasanya terbatas pada batu permata sintetis yang digunakan dalam industri metalurgi, keramik, dan pengolahan kimia.
