Gas inert ditiupkan secara terus-menerus ke dalam cairan logam, dan metode pemurnian di mana inklusi teroksidasi serta hidrogen dibawa ke permukaan cairan selama proses mengapungnya gelembung disebut pemurnian dengan gas inert. Semakin kecil tegangan permukaan antara gas inert dan inklusi, serta semakin besar tegangan permukaan antara cairan logam dan gas inert serta tegangan antarmuka antara cairan logam dan inklusi, semakin kuat kemampuan gas inert ini dalam menghilangkan terak.<\/p>\n<p>Saat menggunakan gas inert untuk proses pemurnian, fluks harus ditaburkan secara merata di permukaan cairan. Hal ini karena setelah gelembung gas inert membawa inklusi ke permukaan cairan, jika pada saat itu terdapat lapisan fluks di permukaan cairan, inklusi tersebut akan masuk ke dalam fluks dan berubah menjadi terak, yang mudah diangkat. Sebaliknya, inklusi dengan berat jenis yang lebih besar akan jatuh kembali ke dalam aluminium cair, sedangkan inklusi dengan kepadatan yang lebih kecil akan membentuk busa di permukaan cairan, yang sulit dipisahkan dari aluminium cair. Ketika busa-busa ini ditarik keluar, banyak logam cair akan ikut terangkat.<\/p>\n<p>Alasan mengapa peniupan gas inert ke dalam lelehan dapat menghilangkan gas adalah karena tidak ada hidrogen dalam gelembung gas inert yang ditiupkan ke dalam lelehan, sehingga tekanan parsial hidrogennya nol, sedangkan tekanan parsial hidrogen dalam lelehan di dekat gelembung jauh lebih besar dari nol. Oleh karena itu, terdapat perbedaan tekanan parsial hidrogen antara bagian dalam dan luar gelembung. Di bawah pengaruh perbedaan tekanan parsial ini, atom-atom hidrogen dalam cairan logam berdifusi ke antarmuka gelembung, dan bergabung kembali ke dalam gelembung di antarmuka tersebut. Proses ini akan berhenti ketika tekanan parsial di dalam dan di luar gelembung menjadi sama. Hidrogen yang masuk ke dalam gelembung akan keluar ke atmosfer saat gelembung tersebut mengapung ke atas.
