Dalam proses peleburan aluminium dan paduan aluminium, hidrogen sangat mudah larut dalam aluminium cair. Unsur Mg dalam paduan Al-Mg memiliki afinitas yang lebih besar terhadap oksigen daripada aluminium, dan MgO terbentuk setelah oksidasi, yang tidak padat dan dapat merusak lapisan aluminium oksida yang padat. Di antaranya, gas inert mengacu pada gas yang tidak bereaksi secara kimiawi dengan cairan aluminium dan hidrogen terlarut, serta tidak terlarut dalam cairan aluminium. Biasanya, gas inert Ar, N\u2082 hanya dihembuskan ke dalam cairan aluminium, sehingga tekanan parsial hidrogen dalam gelembung gas inert adalah nol. Terdapat perbedaan tekanan parsial hidrogen pada antarmuka antara gelembung gas inert dan aluminium cair, sehingga hidrogen dalam aluminium cair terus-menerus berdifusi ke dalam gelembung-gelembung tersebut; dengan demikian, hidrogen dalam cairan aluminium berdifusi ke dalam gelembung-gelembung tersebut akibat perbedaan tekanan parsial tersebut. Semakin besar luas permukaan spesifik gelembung, semakin pendek jarak yang harus ditempuh hidrogen dalam cairan aluminium untuk berdifusi ke dalam gelembung, semakin lambat laju naiknya, dan semakin tinggi efisiensi penghilangan hidrogen. Selain itu, efisiensi penghilangan hidrogen juga bergantung pada parameter proses seperti waktu pemurnian penghilangan hidrogen, tekanan gas hasil pemurnian, dan suhu gas hasil pemurnian.
