Perlakuan modifikasi ini terutama bertujuan untuk menghaluskan fase kedua atau mengubah morfologi dan distribusinya. Artikel ini terutama berfokus pada silikon eutektik dalam paduan aluminium-silikon. Jika tidak dimodifikasi, silikon eutektik berbentuk jarum dan serpihan kasar, yang menyebabkan penurunan sifat mekanis paduan, terutama ketangguhannya. Penambahan sejumlah kecil sekitar 0,005% hingga 0,01% dapat mengubah fase silikon eutektik dari berbentuk jarum menjadi serat yang seragam sepenuhnya.
