Media yang digunakan untuk penyaringan disebut media filter. Lubang-lubang kecil pada media filter disebut lubang filter. Di bawah pengaruh perbedaan tekanan antara kedua sisi media penyaring, cairan mengalir melalui media penyaring dan menjadi filtrat, sedangkan semua partikel padat tertinggal di media penyaring.
