Tujuannya adalah untuk mengurangi oksidasi logam cair, mengurangi penetrasi hidrogen dari atmosfer, menyerap inklusi non-logam yang tersuspensi dalam logam cair, menjaga agar dinding tungku\/wadah tetap bersih dari endapan oksida yang menumpuk, serta mengurangi kandungan aluminium yang tersisa dalam endapan, menghilangkan hidrogen terlarut dalam logam cair, menghaluskan butiran aluminium selama proses pemadatan, memodifikasi inklusi silikon dalam paduan yang mengandung silikon, serta mengoksidasi kelebihan magnesium. Komponen-komponen agen pemurnian tersebut bereaksi dengan aluminium untuk membentuk senyawa gas (klorida aluminium, fluorida aluminium). Gas tersebut membentuk gelembung dan naik ke permukaan logam cair. Tekanan parsial hidrogen dalam gelembung yang terbentuk sangat rendah, sehingga hidrogen berdifusi dari aluminium cair ke dalam gelembung. Fluks yang telah dihilangkan gasnya juga dapat dimasukkan melalui injeksi. Dalam hal ini, gas inert berfungsi sebagai pembawa untuk fluks granular.
