Oleh karena itu, lelehan yang diperoleh dari daur ulang sisa foil mengandung sejumlah besar partikel oksida dan gas terperangkap. Agar logam tersebut layak untuk digunakan selanjutnya, logam tersebut harus diolah untuk menghilangkan pengaruh gas yang dapat menyebabkan lubang tiup atau ruang kosong lainnya pada hasil pengecoran. Jika kandungan magnesium dalam cairan aluminium terlalu tinggi, kelebihan magnesium tersebut juga akan dianggap sebagai kontaminan; dan sebaliknya. Namun, pada pengolahan banyak lelehan aluminium, kandungan magnesiumnya tidak berlebihan, dan diupayakan untuk menghilangkan hidrogen serta unsur-unsur berbahaya lainnya tanpa mengubah kandungan magnesium dalam lelehan secara signifikan.<\/p>\n<p>Usulan yang ada untuk menghilangkan polutan yang disebutkan di atas mencakup penggunaan gas yang dialirkan melalui lelehan untuk bereaksi secara kimiawi dengan pengotor atau menghilangkan pengotor secara fisik. Gas yang sesuai antara lain gas inert, seperti argon dan nitrogen; gas reaktif, seperti klorin (dari garam yang mengandung klorin, tablet penghasil klorin, biasanya heksakloroetana, klorin, dan gas halokarbon) serta fluor; dan gas inert berupa campuran nitrogen dan argon atau campuran gas reaktif (klorin dan fluor).<\/p>\n<p>Terdapat tiga mekanisme fisik yang berperan dalam menghilangkan unsur-unsur tersebut. Ketika gas jenis di atas dimasukkan ke dalam cairan logam, hidrogen yang terdapat dalam cairan logam akan berdifusi ke dalam gelembung-gelembung yang naik, dan partikel-partikel terak akan menempel pada permukaan gelembung-gelembung tersebut.
