Penghalang ini memiliki banyak kegunaan. Pertama, penghalang ini mengumpulkan logam cair awal yang digunakan untuk mengisi elemen filter berpori dan membentuknya menjadi kolam logam cair yang dipanaskan. Aliran awal logam cair digunakan untuk mengisi filter busa keramik. Aliran awal ini dicegah oleh dinding penahan agar tidak masuk ke saluran keluar. Sebaliknya, aliran tersebut terkumpul di ruang antara rakitan filter dan dinding penahan sehingga membentuk genangan logam cair yang dipanaskan. Ketika lebih banyak logam cair mengalir melalui filter, logam cair tambahan tersebut didorong ke atas oleh dinding penahan. Logam cair tambahan tersebut juga digunakan untuk menaikkan suhu logam cair yang terkumpul dan menjaganya pada suhu pemanasan ulang yang optimal.
