Proses penghilangan gas ini dibatasi oleh hukum-hukum termodinamika; ketika gelembung gas pembersih dimasukkan ke dalam cairan logam, gelembung-gelembung tersebut menyerap hidrogen saat mengapung ke permukaan. Laju penghilangan gas sebesar 200, misalnya, berarti dibutuhkan 200 liter gas inert untuk menghilangkan satu liter hidrogen. Perilaku ini membatasi kemampuan ahli metalurgi untuk melakukan degassing hingga tingkat hidrogen yang sangat rendah. Kelarutan juga meningkat secara eksponensial seiring kenaikan suhu, yang berarti bahwa kenaikan suhu sebesar 200\u00b0F (111\u00b0C) akan menggandakan kelarutan.
