Aluminum Filtration used in Aluminum Gravity Casting

Today’s aluminum industry requires strict metal quality standards to prevent parts failure in key components of automobiles, airplanes, and machinery. Filtration is the last online metal treatment performed before molten aluminum casting. To control the flow rate and reduce the level of inclusions entering the filter system, many other upstream processing stages are required, all of which help deliver products that meet or exceed expectations. Online filters used in foundries can take many forms, usually divided into multi-purpose filter boxes or disposable filters, such as trough socks and ceramic foam filters (CFF).

Aluminum Filtration

The filter is prepared by dipping foam with ceramic slurry containing phosphate binder, extruding excess slip, drying and burning foam material at 1660°C. Thus, the obtained ceramic filter is basically phosphate-free, ceramic particles sintered together.

The filter device has sufficient thermal and mechanical strength. In addition, in order to avoid transportation of cast molten metal and bearing impact and stress, the need to overheat the molten metal to prevent hole clogging is avoided, and molten metal with predetermined properties can be reliably produced and reproduced even in a large size.

CFF is a high-purity alumina-based product that can provide primary aluminum applications in various sizes and grades. It has considerable strength at ambient temperature and molten aluminum temperature, strong and durable, high thermal conductivity, and chemical resistance. They can be used in aluminum gravity casting (permanent mold), die casting, low pressure, squeeze casting and high performance sand casting to remove inclusions.
